1939 Wheaties

1939 baseball Wheaties Boxes

Breakfast cereal companies Quaker Oats, General Mills, Kelloggs and Post have had long standing relationships with professional sports. Major League baseball had a special relationship with Quaker Oats and Wheaties. In 1939 they provided breakfast reading material for the youth of America. The Centennial campaign was well served by the backs of boxes and the box tops children saved to receive premiums celebrating the 100th birthday of baseball. Steve Hannagan's handbook proved to be a valuable resource for Wheaties in its series celebrating the Centennial of Baseball.

The comic section of the Sunday papers featured advertisements promoting special offers exchanged for cereal box tops and the premiums were very popular.

Another great find was a Wheaties salesman's order book from 1939. It was used as a point-of-sale tool at grocery stores to increase sales. The first section promoted the Centennial of Baseball with eight different boxes to complete the issue started in May 1939. The second series covered the players selected for the All Star game who appeared on the backs of Wheaties boxes in August of 1939. Wheaties also offered a bat pencil celebrating the 100th anniversary of baseball as a special promotion for box tops.
